“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”
-Socrates We are all teachers… and all students too. This life is full of learning and growth opportunities. We may find our guides or teachers in the most unexpected places and when we least expect it. It’s good to acknowledge that we are all teachers though, so that we may be present as much as possible and speaking our truth so that the wisdom we share and lessons we teach are meaningful and of service to those around us. I’ve been here in Eustis, Florida, a small city in Lake County, North-East of Orlando for about a month now. We came here by chance, in search of affordable and available accommodations during the high season for snow birds. Turns out that this is a pretty sweet, rather quiet community with monthly street parties (“First Friday”), a weekly preschool library group, vegan cafe, a brew pub, parks and a lovely little yoga studio. I reached out to Eustis yoga via email a couple of weeks before arriving. Tracey, the owner of the studio viewed my website and graciously invited me to come to class and chat. She asked that I attend some classes to get the feel for her studio, her students and her style. Within the month I have taught 2 classes and a workshop, with another special class scheduled this week. Taking regular yoga classes in the Sivananda lineage has been cool and out of the norm for me. Changing one’s practice is so very beneficial; fostering full presence - a moving, mindful flow and connection. As a student, I’ve participated in many classes, group meditation and a crystal bowl healing session. I also look forward to joining in Kirtan later this month. Although it was my wish and intention to teach far more, I have been very blessed for this experience. In the paraphrased words of Mic Jagger, you can’t always get what you want...but you get what you need ;) Teaching while traveling has been a good reminder of the student within. Being the student of another teacher encourages me to have open ears and an open mind, just following the lead of my guide, without question or ego. Finding the student within myself while teaching others that I do not know invites a full presence to observe, honour and respect them, learning as I move through each breath, request, suggestion and sequence and adjusting as needed. Great growth here. Demonstrating sage grace as the student and humble growth as the teacher. Yin within yang, sun within moon, love within intuition. Great balance. I did an amazing 8 hours of teacher training yesterday at Yoga Bala in Port Orange (Daytona Beach) in the lineage of Ashtanga - my first practice; my true yoga love 💚 I am inspired to continue training, learning & growing. May you also open your heart and mind to possibilities within the flow as you let go of expectations. It is there that you will find your own teachers and guides - human or otherwise. Namaste. “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” -Gandhi
